Girlie gingham – under £50

11 Jun

There’s something exclusively summery about gingham. More than even florals or nautical stripes, which both have their winter incarnations. You just don’t really see gingham done when the weather is rubbish and the nights are darker, as demonstrated by the stylish ladies of Pinterest…

Perhaps that’s because gingham just looks so right with sunglasses and white jeans – both high summer staples. Or maybe it’s because it reminds us all of outdoor tablecloths in the summer!

Whatever the reason, I’m embracing this summer staple with my pick of high-street gingham pieces under £50. Feast your eyes…

Shirt, £34, Topshop

Trousers, £39, Topshop

Cami, £14.99, New Look

Wrap skirt, £39, Warehouse

Dress, £45, Asos

My top tip? Wear it head to toe – I’m thinking the pink trousers and cold-shoulder blouse worn together would be a winning look. Be brave!

Hot colour combo: pink and red

14 May

As much as I love classic neutrals like white and grey with denim, sometimes you just need a super bright and girlie colour combo. And right now I’ve completely obsessed with pictures I’ve been seeing on Instagram of red and pink outfits. Check them out…

There’s a clear style formula here, and this is a look that’s perfect for wedding guests, especially if you’re looking for something a bit more modern than a dress. You’ll need:one full skirt in bright pink, red or a floral; one pair of killer statement heels in bright red or pale pink; one simple top, from a white shirt to a cami to a lace body – tuck it in to keep it sleek; and finally, for the most glamorous of looks, finish it off with a statement pair of sunnies.

Here are some bits I’ve found to recreate the look…

The skirts

Skirt, £54, Closet

Skirt, £79, Monsoon

Skirt, £30.12, Chic Wish (also comes in red…)

The tops

Body, £17.99, Cameo Rose at New Look

image1xxl (1)

Top, £24, Oasis

Jumper, £19.99, Uniqlo

The shoes

Shoes, £24.99, New Look

Shoes, £49, Office

Shoes, £69, Office

And finally, the sunglasses

I can’t get enough of these kooky, retro sunnies, £22 from Topshop. Cool enough to make a statement, but because they’re monochrome, they won’t fight with the pink and red.

Prefer a classic?

These classic black aviators are a winner, and only £18 from Topshop.

Do you love this pretty look?

Pick up a pinny

6 Mar

I’m having a major back to school moment (sartorially, anyway), because I’m finding myself drawn to all things pinafore. Back in the day, aged five, I love a grey pinny with a white polo shirt and a red cardigan and, frankly, I think I’d happily sport that combo again right now…

Pinafore, £11, New Look. Bargain alert! I also like the styling here with the roll neck. Perfect if it’s still a bit chilly before you bring in…

A natty little polo shirt. This one’s Lacoste for J Crew and is £49. It’s a summer classic, so I think the little splurge is justified, but you can find much cheaper versions from Asos, Uniqlo and the like.

Finish the look with a red cardie…

This Uniqlo cashmere one is reduced to £59.90. And there you have your modern day school pinafore look. I’d steer clear of patent T-bar shoes – that might be a step too far – and add black tights and ankle boots for now, then white Stan Smiths or Converse and bare legs in the summer. Even better? All of these pieces are versatile enough to work with umpteen other things in your wardrobe.

Got the taste for pinafores? Here are some others I’m loving…

image1xxl (4)

£38, Asos. Is it strictly a pinny or is it a dungaree dress? I don’t know, but it must be mine! Anything frilly is top of my wish list right now.

£38, Topshop. Wear with a roll-neck or silk blouse by day, then go it alone with heels for a gorgeous evening dress. Also – great price for Topshop!

£25.99, Zara. Grown-up colour, plunge neckline and textured finish. A very cool option from Zara, naturally. Love it dressed down with the trainers.

Are you going back to school?

Very sporting

6 Feb

It’s news to no one that sportswear-inspired fashion is huge right now. As I sit here writing this I’m wearing my jazzy rose-gold Puma sweatshirt – something I never would’ve worn just a couple of years ago – and my trainer wishlist gets longer by the day.

But sportswear isn’t just about Adidas Stan Smiths and Nike Cortez.

I’ve noticed a more refined side to athletic clothing. From cricket jumpers and tennis whites to equestrian chic, these pieces are very English and ever so slightly refined. I’m in!

I love this cricket jumper from Topshop…

£39, Topshop. It’d be perfect right now with navy trousers or jeans, worn over a crisp white shirt or even a roll neck. Then, come spring, swap your trousers for a trusty denim skirt and bare legs.

And this Asos dress has Wimbledon written all over it…

£59, Asos. Ok, so you might not see Serena Williams racing around in it, but it’s ideal for a spectator. And while it might look like a spring/summer dress through and through, throw a jumper on over the top and you’ve got yourself a goes-with everything midi skirt!

Riding boots have long been a fashion favourite, but now it looks like jodhpur trousers have left the manege and hit the streets…

£40, River Island. Such a useful neutral colour. These are just crying out to be worn with a denim shirt or navy cashmere jumper. Then style them up for an evening out with a bang-on-trend camisole top.

The silky bomber jacket is well and truly no longer the preserve of athletes heading to the track…

£49.99, Zara. Gorgeous silky bombers are undoubtedly the jacket of this spring. They’re already hitting the shops and selling out like hot cakes. The floral and embroidered styles are super pretty, but I like the minimalistic vibe of this silver number. Very Isabel Marant ss16.

Topshop’s got a great range of ballet-inspired pieces…

From £17-34 at Topshop. The waist-cinching styles are pretty, flattering and very versatile. Try them over a sleeveless dress or jumpsuit, or just add a bit of interest to jeans and a white T-shirt.

And no shoe fan can have missed the rise of the ballet-shoe-inspired block-heel courts that are taking over the high street. Started by Celine, this is a trend that just won’t quit…

£59, Topshop. As always, Topshop is front and centre of a trend, selling these Juno pumps in five colours. I’m not normally a fan of red shoes (not sure why, I bloomin’ love Wizard of Oz), but if I succumb to these babies I definitely want the ruby red ones!

And finally, fancy a little high-end Judo styling?

£190, Joseph at Farfetch. It’s pricey, but it’s a staple, and will be perfect for all those spring weddings on the horizon. All you need is a black belt!

Girlie chic

9 Jan

When the weather outside is dreary and there’s still two-thirds of January to get through, we all need something lovely to give us a bit of cheer.

Which is why I’m voting for super-pretty girlie dressing this month.

It might feel like the perfect time to cosy up in jeans, trainers and sports sweaters (and believe me, I will still be doing that on some days), but the rest of the time I intend to make an effort with feminine frills, ruffles, lace and lots of pink.

Here’s a bit of ss16 catwalk inspiration from Balenciaga, Gucci and Luisa Beccaria…

And here are a few gorgeously girlie pieces I’ve spotted on the high street…

This Rosie for Autograph camisole from M&S, £35, is too pretty to be saved for underwear. Paired with skinny blue jeans and thick cable-knit cardi, it’s perfect for the weekend.

hmprod (1)

This blouse has a lovely Victoriana look, and is a bit of a bargain at £24.99, from H&M.

I like the subtle ruffle on this dress from Vila, £38 from Asos. I think some ruffled dresses can look a bit stiff, but this one is quite minimal, and therefore very chic. The blush colour is also flattering on lots of skin tones.

Oasis usually does a good line in florals, and this season is no different. This shirt, for £38, is just one of many seriously pretty flowery numbers it has in at the moment. See also this embroidered top…

£32, Oasis

Not a fan of pink? I’ve got a bit of a penchant for this green suede-style skirt from River Island. It’s just a soft and feminine, without the candy-coloured cuteness, and only £30.

Ladylike dressing needs a midi-heeled shoe, and I think Topshop has one of the best selections out there. These silver strappies for £49 are prim and proper, but lend the look a nice futuristic vibe.

Zara’s cute top-handle bag, for £29.99, is the perfect budget-friendly finishing touch for this look. And even if you’re having a grey day and can’t be bothered to throw on a floral dress or lacy skirt, add this little number to your jeans and jumper to look instantly a little more Elle Woods.

The best of 2015 fashion

30 Dec

With just one more full day of 2015 remaining, I thought this would be a nice chance to look back at some of my favourite trends that I’ve blogged about over the past year.

These are the pieces that I’ve been loving, with a few suggestions for new ways to style them up for 2016…

In October, I featured these sparkly shoes from Boden.

The glitter version have all sold out, but these chic black ones are new, and reduced from £89 to £62.30.

I think I’d go for the full Audrey Hepburn look with these – slim black trousers, a black roll neck and a swingy black ponytail. What could be classier? Or step into January with a splash, by teaming them with trusty black opaques and a loud, proud fuchsia swing dress

This is reduced to just £10 at Asos.

Not feeling the girlie vibe? Swap the black roll neck I mentioned above for a sporty tee

£22, Adidas at Asos. The monochrome palette and slim-fit shape mean this is a safe option for the sports-luxe-shy (aka me).

In September, I became obsessed with pompom shoes, and in particular this pair, which are now sold out…

Thankfully, Topshop still has a few pairs of this very similar style left, which are in the sale for £15…

For 2016, I’d embrace the geek chic popularised by Gucci and style them up with a pleated midi skirt, tank top and roll neck. You couldn’t fail to feel cheerful on your first day back at work dressed like that!

Topshop’s grey/silver skirt will add just enough sparkle to a grey January day…

And at £30, it won’t hurt that post-Christmas bank balance.

In May, I went crazy for ghillie shoes – along with the rest of the world. I bought this blue pair from Asos…

They’re now long gone, but there are millions of other pairs (or so it seems!) still for the taking. And on a practical note, I didn’t think these would be the comfiest of shoes, but they actually are. I did a day-long shopping trip in these the very first time I wore them and I was blister free.

For a 2016 take, I like this chic, minimalist pair, which are reduced to £39 in the Asos sale…

image1xxl (1)

I think they’d make the perfect trans-seasonal outfit with this grey jumper dress from Whistles, which is down to £85 in the sale…

I was up for all-denim-everything in April, with this Zara midi skirt leading the pack…

I’m so pleased that denim’s still going strong for 2016, and I’ve currently got my eye on this pinafore from Asos…

image1xxl (2).jpg

Looks just like my favourite skirt in dress form! I’ll wear it for work with a pussybow blouse and ankle boots, then at the weekend with a ribbed knit and trainers.

And finally, back in January, a whole year ago, I was mad for suede in all its forms, but particularly jackets. This red number from Mango was at the top of my wishlist…

But, for 2016, I think I might be swayed by the simple shape and attention grabbing colour of this cobalt version, down to £54.99 in the sale.

Whereas I’d wear the red one with a dreamy boho dress from Zara, I think this blue one needs strong shapes and clean lines. So a white t-shirt and these striped wide leg trousers from Asos, which are now just £24, should do the trick…

I wonder what style choices 2016 will bring? Happy new year!

Jumpers and jeans

5 Dec

At this time of year, my wardrobe can pretty much be divided into two categories: dressed-up stuff for Christmas parties, and cosy casual stuff the rest of the time. So I thought I’d write a post about the best kind of casual combination, and one that pretty much all of us like to fall back on: jumpers and jeans.

The options are endless, as is the celebrity inspiration. Here are a few of my favourite looks…

‘Mom’ jeans and a cropped Aran knit.

I love this look on Bella Hadid. I haven’t yet got myself a pair of high-waisted, straight-legged ‘Mom’ jeans, but I think it’s about time I did.

Levi’s new ‘Wedgie’ style jeans look pretty special – and a bit like Bella’s…

£95, Levi’s

And Topshop’s ‘Mom’ jeans do what they say on the tin…

£40, Topshop

For the jumper, I bought this roll-neck in H&M a couple of weeks ago, and I think it’s a pretty good match for Bella’s. I also find that the slightly cropped length makes it more flattering, as a chunky knit can verge on bulky territory, but this doesn’t swamp…

hmprod (1)

£29.99, H&M

And finally, a doppelganger for Bella’s Aquazzuras, try these…

£75, Office

But this is a casualwear post, so I’d definitely prefer the flat version…

Bonus? They’re reduced to £14 in Topshop.

The second jean I’m focusing on is the classic black skinny and, as far as I’m concerned, there is no better inspiration than Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley. Just look at her many ways with black skinnies…

There’s an easy formula to copy here (though looking like Rosie cannot be guaranteed).

Take great black skinnies. I think Asos has a great selection of styles in a really true black wash. These are the ‘Lisbon’…

£25, Asos

Or bust the budget an invest in my favourite denim brand, MiH. I haven’t tried these ‘Bodycon’ ones yet, but I’m yet to meet an MiH jean that I don’t like…

£195, MiH Jeans

To emphasise the leg-lengthening effect of these jeans, Rosie always adds a black boot, whether it’s ankle or OTK. And they always have at least a little heel. These pairs are both from New Look…

£44.99, New Look

£22.99, New Look

Jumpers are fine knit, oversized and in earthy colours. I can see Rosie in either of these Mango numbers…

£34.99 each, Mango

And finally, top it all off with a fedora from Boohoo…

£18, Boohoo.com

And finally, for those super slouchy days, I present Alessandra Ambrosio in ripped boyfriends and a stripy knit.

Zara’s ripped boyfriends are a dead ringer…

£29.99, Zara

Red and black jumpers are, for some reason, really hard to track down! So I’ll have to settle for classic black and white, like this Daisy Street number…

image1xxl (1).jpg

£22.99, Asos

Then all you need is a cool printed scarf to finish the look (because you don’t need me to tell you where to buy flat black ankle boots – we all have those in our wardrobes!). Oliver Bonas is my go-to for scarves…

£16, Oliver Bonas

Hope you’re keeping cosy in your jeans and jumpers!
